ARCHIVE: US Masters 5K & 10K national record-holder Kevin Castille kicks 2012 Running Camp off in historic form

Kevin Castille, holder of the US Masters 5K & 10K records, opened the 2012 Nelson County Running camp in historic fashion. Without question the most accomplished athlete to address the event in its 7-year run, Kevin impressed the crowd of about 40 campers and guests not only with incredible stats, but also his down-to-earth running wisdom and kindness.
Kevin qualified for Masters competition this past year with his 40th birthday, and wasted little time demolishing the US records for the age group, posting a 14:03 5K and a 28:30 10K. His PRs are even more spectacular. Kevin is currently training with the goal of a 2:16:00 marathon, which will bring him to another Masters-level national championship and US record.
Highlights of Kevin's talk included the need for passion and focus in training, the importance of individualizing workouts, and that developing runners need to take responsibility and possession of their training. "Once that starting guns sounds," Kevin said, "runners need to know they become their own coach."
Kevin said his current weekly miles is about 80-100 miles, but he called this "a break" in that he's not competing but about once every 3 weeks. The day he spoke was an "easy day," with a 10-mile AM run which he did at Dean Watts before camp started, and an 8-mile tempo run scheduled for that evening.

2012 Nelson County Running Camp hosts 45 campers, boasts top-notch speakers

2012 campers enjoyed a tremendous week of daily dual-sessions with great workouts, great speakers, great competition, and a great time had by all. Special thanks go to the volunteers who made it happen: speakers Kevin Castillo, Cody James, Kevin Allesandro, Flannery Musk, Joseph Wheatley, and Chris Boozer; ringers Nicole Perugini, Addison Wheatley, Flannery Musk, Rodo Godenzi, Joseph Wheatley, Ethan Paulley, and Mark Scout; coaches Matt Hoyes, Tom Vernon, Jo Sugrue, and Dan Bradley; and NCXCTF booster Prez Dee Vernon. Here's hoping a great camp means a great season is to follow. Check out the following camp highlights:
Captain Hailey R.'s Los Vikingos were crowned 2012 Team Challenge Champs!
As the shaving cream fight began, campers could still be recognized by their mommas. But soon that would all change.
Winton V.'s has his Greased Lightning team all pinked out. Especially Austin. Wow.
Coach Hoyes introduces 4-time Ironman triathlete and CHHS XCTF coach Chris Boozer, who addressed the camp on the benefits of foam rolling.

Captain Paden V.'s E-lemon-ators took Runner-up in the Team Challenge
Flag tag is a full contact sport when Rodolfo's on the field. Mark gets Rodo, or Patrick gets Mark before Mark gets pancaked? You make the call.
Morgan's Meerkats look ready to compete in the 5K race. Or kill somebody.
2012 campers close out camp by getting a different kind of foam rolling.
